None of the pages were showing up. User approx. needed to wait 15 seconds to see the page. Some of them weren't even loading. Website needed help BADLY. This is how we can spot BAD code I was talking about in About Me section.
Well, not everything. We kept using same videos and content, but all the styles, page's structure, fonts got changed. With a simple template (that you can find in the first section) we got amazing results and reduced loading speed from about 15 seconds to 1.93 seconds.
Amazing provider. He is very detailed oriented and an amazing communicator. An amazing front end developer
How you'd feel if 90% of the people that get to your website leaves after 5 seconds without even seeing the content (that they'd like and some of them'll buy it)? All of the ads you'd run show bad results and you don't get any conversions after few thousand people visited your website, that's when you know something is bad with your site.
Your ads look great and drag attention. Your content is fine and sell. But there's one thing that business owners don't think of. It is how well your website is optimized. How fast their images load, how fast an animation is showing up, etc. In the end, loading speed is the only thing that matters.
There's many ways to increase that easily, even if you're not familiar with coding. Scroll to results if you want to know how!
Home page is the mother of all pages. It needs to be good and load fast. It needs to be simple and easy to understand.
As School of Cards provided their new design for the home page, we needed to make it work, load and feel smooth. Few lines of text, a nice big button with inviting text inside is basically all you need for the home page for this kind of business. I mean, you wouldn't want to have few lines of text and a button in the home page if you're running a news business and have many articles, but simple is better.
Let's start with the whole project. It was challenging at the beginning, there was over 100 pages and ALL of them were broken. They've hired 3 developers and haven't had any luck. I was the 4th one. Fourth time's a charm? Lol. And it was a charm. Successful hire for the 4th time. I was sure that I can fix it.
I didn't write this post to brag about how good I am or to throw trash at those 3 lazy developers. We, developers, are the laziest people in the world. Many of us are tired of doing the same thing over and over again. This is crucial if you're developing sites. They'd align text 10 pixels lower than it is in the design, add wrong font and just don't pay attention to details. And these little things is how you make amazing websites. You need to like it. You need to like the result. If you don't - you need to re-do until you like it.
Put it like this. You're a mechanic. You've fixed a car and you don't like the result. Its working, but you know it will break after few months. What'd you do?
A good mechanic would examine every part of the engine, point out what's going to break in the next 10,000 miles, fix the car, test-drive it and confirm its good, change oil for free, call the owner of the car and lastly, give him some tips on how he can keep this car in good condition.
Lots of mechanics can be scammy and lie about everything to get more of your money. Developers are the same. If they charge low price, they won't put as much work as the other mechanic, who charge 3x their price.
Instead of not paying attention to the things you don't want to do or tired of doing, you just need to find someone else to do it for you. This way you can keep your code in high quality, get better results and make customer happy. I have 2 other reserved developers in the team for this purpose.
Cool? I like it too. We actually were thinking about adding a Poker chip or a moving Poker Card, but in order to do that, we'd need a designer and animator (= more money + time spent), so we went with easier thing and make changes based on feedback.
SS. Smooth & Simple. That was our goal. Technologies are changing, they're getting better and better, same is happening in the WEB world. Just.. Everything here changes way faster and it's hard to keep up. We've decided to not chase the "very best" templates or framework to work with, but instead to have everything working smoothly with our own developed structures & systems.
There was one thing I kept dealing with. Naming things. It's so hard to describe things in WEB that it literally have been taking nearly two minutes to understand what we were talking about each time. And times we've been talking about whole different thing is impossible to count on fingers.
We came up with a great solution for this. Giving names to things for the first time and then using it again and again. So, if it was taking 2 minutes on average each time we'd discuss something in WEB, now you just gotta come up with a name for it and you've made your life easier.
"Email thing" - A pop up with a form to collect your email and name.
"Video page" - A page that has a video and a button in it. When you click the button "Email thing" pops up.
Kind of ridiculous names, but it helps. A LOT. Can't remember all of them, but I made one mistake here.. I wasn't saving them anywhere. As I look back at it, you gotta have something like this if you're working with someone for a long time. Especially if you're working on the same project for few years. TOTALLY LIFE CHANGING.
That's the pop up I was talking about. Remember our goal? Smooth & Simple is exactly what we need.
Let's talk about results. We don't make websites just to make them. If you don't make money out of us, you won't need us again. That's the thing, we're looking for long-term partnerships, not for one-time hire for a few hundred bucks.
150% increase in conversion rate, now generating 300% ROI in 1 year period. 30% increase in conversion rate on opt-in page. 38% increase in user's spending time on page. 70% decrease in abandoned users. 250+ hours spent working on the whole project and counting.
We're always suggesting to install Users Analytics based software (such as hotjar.com) into their websites, because the data you can get from those softwares can reduce your Cost per Click or any other Cost per Action A LOT. Let's say you have 2 buttons on your page and want to know which one is getting most clicks. These sort of apps lets you see that in seconds. You can even see how much your users scroll down, what they click, how much time they spend in your site and even see where they move their mouse. HOW NEAT IS THAT?
You can imagine what you can do with this kind of information. There's much more you need to look after when doing business online and trying to be successfull and profitable. But practice makes perfect. We don't judge someone who made a mistake. Nothing comes in perfect shape instantly.
Improve loading speed of your site. Compress HTML, CSS, JavaScript files and all the images using tinypng.com. It will increase your site's loading speed at least twice. If it didn't - schedule free consultation, something is wrong with your website's code.
By the time this project description is created, there's three main courses created by School of Cards. Each one has its own color scheme and customized design. Cash Game Fix, Predictive Edge, Poker Bootcamp - click one of the courses to see how amazing it looks.
There's many other pages that you can see by visiting www.schoolofcards.com. As the project gets bigger, we'll keep this description updated.
Details matters a lot. 5 pixels can look small, but if you'd move text on a site by 5 pixels more, it wouldn't look and feel the same as in design. That's called pixel-perfect
Have you ever got frustated when you were on your phone and you needed to zoom in to read the text or look at what they're offering? Me too. Its because that site is not responsive
Waiting for a website to load can be annoying. A site should load in less than 2 seconds, otherwise you'd be losing users
